Driving on Ash Streets

 by Kyle Jacobs

Driving,
windows down to take my breath away.
I don’t want it anymore.
Chords and notes
trying so hard to reach me
from half-broken speakers.
The dangling cigarette
burning away in my lips
as all the ash just falls.
Never taking a puff,
but I light another.
Blasting the highway,
dodging incoming lights,
and veering the road away.
My tires burn
as the ash flitters down
from my eyes
lit up by the falling sun.
The emanating waves of “Baba O’Riley”
telling me what I should do,
as the violins call to me.
Billboards and road signs
questioning me.
Asking me if I’m the right me.
If I fit in my skin.
As is stretching my skin tight
over too many bones
and dangling gold ornaments
from ever crease of flesh
would remake me.
I put out a cigarette on the sun,
against the windshield.
The ash shields me.
The black circle hanging there
like a dead eye watching,
like a yawning mouth
of the pale horse rider.
Keep dodging.
Keep moving.
Can’t let the cop lights see you.
Holding too much toll money
stolen from every hotel
I stopped at
to ask which way to paradise.
The CD changes tracks
so I change lanes.
”Question” by the Moody Blues
about war and love and the war of love,
waiting for a miracle.
The cigarette burns to close,
I couldn’t see it,
and my lips are on fire.
Spitting breaths of smoke
and curling fire.
Ash now rising in my lap
as I swerve off the road.
The water tower,
silhouetted against the last peak of the sun,
falls over
and floods the streets with rain and waves.
It cleans me,
cleans my car,
cleans the ash from the window,
and from the floor.
But still I have no more clarity
as the water overtakes the horizon.

Unseen

 by Kyle Jacobs

While driving home I saw a open plain of ground
And piles of it were strewn all around
Foggy dirt clouds billowing and curling in all whirlwind directions
As if some great battle was taking place
But I could see nothing there
I imagined two monsters kicking up dirt and debris in some minor battle
Some territorial dispute over land
Or an angel and a demon fighting in a stand off
Eye to eye
Tooth to tooth
To decide the fate of this region
Or some mystical animals chasing each other in some ancient mating ritual
All this could be
Because the winds were gentle
And I could see nothing there to explain it
I just looked in wonder

We Are All Painted

 by Kyle Jacobs

All the singularities dragging fine lines
Of half drunk unfinished paint. I scrawl out
All my names that the world could call me.
The list ran from my feet to my neck. Now I’m
A man neck deep in pen. The kind of proper
Drunkenness you sew to Emily’s Post. Clutching
To it with my toes, looking pirate-for-land out and
Abound with the golden sun rays of a lighthouse.
It’s such simple tide, placid and heavy, sucking at the
Sky’s blue, so it could reflect it too. Scratching
At the clouds with my chewy finger nail I peel
Away the image of separation, and saw instead
The connected vibration. I saw the crow fly
By the hole in the sky and phase away; Flip
From its proper name into its image on a page.
Painted there for me to see. My nail keeps reaching,
Pulling at the seams and tearing away more.
Now a dead balloon, tattered, leaving an undried sky.
Vivid colors begging me to touch. Asking me in
Soothing tones to feel it. Dangling in front
Of me until the sun connects. The acrylic
Sky rushes my blood. The sun flare reaches into me
And I’m now apart of what it is. What this color
Feeling is. We are made of all the same paint.
We are all seated abreast each other so close
It’s the variation only eyes see.
We are all painted.
